Description
Built in 1972 for the owner of the Eldorado Hotel, this Peter Wilday design is a paragon of Seventies chic, complete with tennis court, in-ground pool, and self-contained pool/guesthouse. The front façade is late mid-Century West Coast residential architecture at its coolest, comprising a shingled horizontal blank wall surmounted by a raked, channeled-steel roof supported by massive timbered joists extending beyond the eaves--classic Wilday and curb appeal to the max., Beyond the courtyard entry are all the accouterments Mike Brady would want: exposed beams, cathedral ceilings, skylights, clerestory windows, atria, a wet bar, a sunken master with fireplace, sunken tub, steam shower, his and hers closets, and a mirrored vanity room that will make you long for frosted lipstick and a shag (haircut). The only thing missing is the riserless staircase, because this baby is single level. It’s a double lot, though, so out back there’s room for a hundred or two. Paths wind down to a resort-sized terrace straight out of Shampoo, with a raised-bed cutting and vegetable garden, espaliered orchard, and mini-vineyard discretely adjacent. Play, tan, thin your beans, and reduce your carbon footprint, too: Geothermal takes care of the heating, and the in-town, central location lets you Uber anywhere in Reno in twenty minutes or less. So bring your architect, designer, and a trampoline: you’re gonna flip at the possibilities.
